Understanding Frequencies

Equal Temperament

Modern tuning system where the octave is divided into 12 equal semitones, each representing a frequency ratio of 2^(1/12) ≈ 1.059463.

MIDI Notes

MIDI notes range from 0-127 (full spec), but this tool focuses on the practical musical range A0-C8 (MIDI 21-108). Middle C (C4) = 60 and A4 = 69 (440Hz reference).

Harmonic Series

Natural overtones that occur at integer multiples of a fundamental frequency. Important for understanding timbre and acoustic instruments.
